SUMMARY:Wilderness Speaker Series: Dr. Diane Boyd\, Wolf Biologist\, on "What is it with Wolves"
DESCRIPTION:2023 Wilderness Speaker Series\n  \nSpeaker: Dr. Diane Boyd\, Wolf Biologist\, MT FWP Region 1 Wolf and Carnivore Specialist (Retired) \nTopic: “What is it with Wolves?”\n \nLocation: Large Community Room (Room 139) in the Arts & Technology Building at FVCC from 7:00 – 8:15 pm. \nDr. Diane Boyd has four decades of applied expertise on behavior\, conservation and management of wild wolf populations. She began her career in 1977 with Dr. L. David Mech’s wolf research project in Minnesota. She moved to Montana in 1979 to study gray wolf recovery in the Rocky Mountains from the first natural colonizer to approximately 2700 wolves today in the western U.S. Her work has focused on wolf ecology\, dispersal\, habitat use\, prey selection\, behavior\, morphology\, genetic relationships\, and the social dimensions of wolf-human conflict resolution. Dr. Boyd has long pondered why people feel so strongly about wolves. They love them or they hate them\, but few people are neutral. She will discuss the journey of wolves and humans through time\, how wolves disappeared and returned\, the science and sociopolitics\, and where we are heading in this relationship. What can we do to conserve this remarkable and confounding species on an increasingly human-dominated landscape? \n———————————————— \nPresented by: Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation\, Wild Montana Flathead-Kootenai Chapter\, Northwest Montana Fire Lookout Association\, and the Natural Resources Conservation Management Program at Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC).

SUMMARY:Montana Models
DESCRIPTION:Montana Models is a 4-night summer camp where groups of middle and high school youth use mathematical modeling to understand their world and solve problems that are important to them and their communities. We believe everyone brings ingenuity\, creativity\, and their own expert knowledge to problems that they care about. Unfortunately\, math in school is often about memorizing facts and applying rules that don’t make sense. We believe math is creative and beautiful\, AND we believe the best solutions are found when people work in teams. That’s why we are inviting groups of 4-6 youth and mentor (4-H or other) to come and experience camp together.

SUMMARY:STEAM Camp for Girls!
DESCRIPTION:Unique Opportunity for Middle School Girls to Learn about Archeology in Glacier \nGlacier National Park and Glacier Institute are partnering together to provide a unique opportunity for 6th–8th grade girls interested in science and related fields. During a three-day\, overnight camp\, partici- pants will learn about Glacier’s cultural resources—specifically the science of archeology. Through sci- ence\, technology\, engineering\, art\, and math (STEAM)\, your child will learn the importance of cultural resources found and protected within the park and discover stories from the past using archeological methods and tools. Participants will also learn life-long skills in leadership\, critical thinking\, and prob- lem solving. Space is limited to 12 participants. Applications are required and must be submitted by Monday\, April 4\, 2022. Apply at www.glacierinstitute.org/steam.

SUMMARY:U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize Competition
DESCRIPTION:The SJWP is the world’s most prestigious award presented to a high school student for a water-research project. The Water Environment Federation (WEF) has coordinated the U.S. competition since its inception in 1997\, and partners closely with their Member Associations (MAs) to execute the program. \nInitially\, a paper competition from 1997-2001\, the eligible projects were gleaned from the regional and state international Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) by MA-appointed judges.  In 2002\, the MAs sent their state winners to the first onsite event that was jointly hosted in Dallas\, TX by WEF and the Water Environment Association of Texas.  The event was modeled after the international event\, including three days of competition and social activities\, and up until 2013\, was the U.S. model. \nThe competition is held in June in order to send the national winner to the international competition in late August.  It is open to public\, private\, or independent high school students in grades 9-12\, that have reached the age of 15 by Aug. 1 of the competition year\, and have conducted water-related science projects. Judging criteria are the same as the international competition and include ratings for relevance\, methodology\, subject knowledge\, practical skills\, creativity and paper/presentation.

SUMMARY:Flathead Valley Rocket Rally
DESCRIPTION:The Flathead Valley Rocket Rally is dedicated to the promotion of science and engineering to 8th grade students by applying the knowledge they have learned in class. It has seen incredible expansion since 2016 and continues to expand each year as more schools ask to join. During the months prior to the Rally\, which is held in late May each year\, the students learn about the physics behind flight and rockets while experimenting in various designs and making improvements in designs based upon flight tests. All of this is in preparation for the Rally where participating schools send teams of 2 – 4 students (depending on class size) to compete for awards in 5 judged categories.

SUMMARY:Junior Science & Humanities Symposium
DESCRIPTION:JSHS is designed to challenge and engage students (Grades 9-12) in science\, technology\, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers. Opportunities for hands-on workshops\, panel discussions\, career exploration\, research lab visits and networking are planned. By participating in regional and national symposia\, students may… \nParticipate in a forum honoring individual achievement in STEM;\nQualify for significant scholarships and other recognition;\nNetwork to enrich understanding of STEM pursuits beyond high school;\nAdvance in statewide\, regional\, national and international symposia;\nDevelop skills to help prepare for undergraduate and graduate pursuits — skills in the application of science content to solve a problem or to gain new knowledge\, writing a paper\, and communicating results.
