SUMMARY:Wilderness Speaker Series: John Fraley on "My Wilderness Life"
DESCRIPTION:2023 Wilderness Speaker Series\nSpeaker: John Fraley\, author\nTopic: “My Wilderness Life: One Man’s Search for Meaning in Montana’s Backcountry” \nLocation: FVCC Arts & Technology Building (Large Community Room–Rm 139) \nJohn will be sharing stories from his newest book. My Wilderness Life chronicles the author’s lifelong love of all places wild and his obsession with uncovering what happened on the August 1974 morning when Terry McCoy’s airplane crashed in what would become the Welcome Creek Wilderness. Join Fraley on a frantic search to find his friend and also on epic treks to traverse an impassable river canyon\, snorkel with pure westslope cutthroat trout\, retrace the footsteps of conservation icon Bud Moore\, track lynx and mountain lion across the Great Bear Wilderness in winter\, hike 42 miles through the Bob Marshall Wilderness in a single day\, and much more. At turns hilarious and heart-breaking\, My Wilderness Life reveals how one man’s unfulfilled dreams can inspire another’s adventures. \n\nPresented by: Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation\, Wild Montana Flathead-Kootenai Chapter\, Northwest Montana Fire Lookout Association\, and the Natural Resources Conservation Management Program at Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC).

SUMMARY:Montana Models
DESCRIPTION:Montana Models is a 4-night summer camp where groups of middle and high school youth use mathematical modeling to understand their world and solve problems that are important to them and their communities. We believe everyone brings ingenuity\, creativity\, and their own expert knowledge to problems that they care about. Unfortunately\, math in school is often about memorizing facts and applying rules that don’t make sense. We believe math is creative and beautiful\, AND we believe the best solutions are found when people work in teams. That’s why we are inviting groups of 4-6 youth and mentor (4-H or other) to come and experience camp together.

SUMMARY:U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize Competition
DESCRIPTION:The SJWP is the world’s most prestigious award presented to a high school student for a water-research project. The Water Environment Federation (WEF) has coordinated the U.S. competition since its inception in 1997\, and partners closely with their Member Associations (MAs) to execute the program. \nInitially\, a paper competition from 1997-2001\, the eligible projects were gleaned from the regional and state international Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) by MA-appointed judges.  In 2002\, the MAs sent their state winners to the first onsite event that was jointly hosted in Dallas\, TX by WEF and the Water Environment Association of Texas.  The event was modeled after the international event\, including three days of competition and social activities\, and up until 2013\, was the U.S. model. \nThe competition is held in June in order to send the national winner to the international competition in late August.  It is open to public\, private\, or independent high school students in grades 9-12\, that have reached the age of 15 by Aug. 1 of the competition year\, and have conducted water-related science projects. Judging criteria are the same as the international competition and include ratings for relevance\, methodology\, subject knowledge\, practical skills\, creativity and paper/presentation.

SUMMARY:Flathead Valley Rocket Rally
DESCRIPTION:The Flathead Valley Rocket Rally is dedicated to the promotion of science and engineering to 8th grade students by applying the knowledge they have learned in class. It has seen incredible expansion since 2016 and continues to expand each year as more schools ask to join. During the months prior to the Rally\, which is held in late May each year\, the students learn about the physics behind flight and rockets while experimenting in various designs and making improvements in designs based upon flight tests. All of this is in preparation for the Rally where participating schools send teams of 2 – 4 students (depending on class size) to compete for awards in 5 judged categories.

SUMMARY:Junior Science & Humanities Symposium
DESCRIPTION:JSHS is designed to challenge and engage students (Grades 9-12) in science\, technology\, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers. Opportunities for hands-on workshops\, panel discussions\, career exploration\, research lab visits and networking are planned. By participating in regional and national symposia\, students may… \nParticipate in a forum honoring individual achievement in STEM;\nQualify for significant scholarships and other recognition;\nNetwork to enrich understanding of STEM pursuits beyond high school;\nAdvance in statewide\, regional\, national and international symposia;\nDevelop skills to help prepare for undergraduate and graduate pursuits — skills in the application of science content to solve a problem or to gain new knowledge\, writing a paper\, and communicating results.

SUMMARY:Expanding Your Horizons 2021 – A Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) has been reimagined for 2021 and although we will miss having our annual conference at FVCC\, we are excited to offer a virtual experience this year that will be in compliance with covid precautions. A limited presenter pool has been matched with selected schools that have the capacity to support this virtual model and we may even learn a thing or two that could enhance our annual event in the future.  \nEYH will be held May 18th\, 2021. Because it is a limited offering with only some of the area schools participating\, we are not accepting open enrollment. We apologize that we cannot serve our usual 400-500 girls this year\, but we expect that we will be back in full operation next year! \n  \nSUPPORT EYH NOW AND IN THE FUTURE WITH A DONATION! \nWe would greatly appreciate if you would consider donating to our EYH conference this year. Even though this is a virtual event\, we still have expenses to cover and we are grateful for donations in any amount.\nSoon we will be able to accept PayPal donations via our STEAM Alliance website\,\nbut until then we can accept a check mailed to the following address: \nSTEAM Alliance\nPO Box 801\nKalispell\, MT 59903 \nTHANK YOU SO MUCH! \n
