SUMMARY:Expanding Your Horizons 2021 – A Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) has been reimagined for 2021 and although we will miss having our annual conference at FVCC\, we are excited to offer a virtual experience this year that will be in compliance with covid precautions. A limited presenter pool has been matched with selected schools that have the capacity to support this virtual model and we may even learn a thing or two that could enhance our annual event in the future.  \nEYH will be held May 18th\, 2021. Because it is a limited offering with only some of the area schools participating\, we are not accepting open enrollment. We apologize that we cannot serve our usual 400-500 girls this year\, but we expect that we will be back in full operation next year! \n  \nSUPPORT EYH NOW AND IN THE FUTURE WITH A DONATION! \nWe would greatly appreciate if you would consider donating to our EYH conference this year. Even though this is a virtual event\, we still have expenses to cover and we are grateful for donations in any amount.\nSoon we will be able to accept PayPal donations via our STEAM Alliance website\,\nbut until then we can accept a check mailed to the following address: \nSTEAM Alliance\nPO Box 801\nKalispell\, MT 59903 \nTHANK YOU SO MUCH! \n

SUMMARY:FVCC Honors Symposium Lecture – Pandemics: How Did We Get Here and Where Are We Going?
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Marshall Bloom – Wednesday\, March 10\, 2021 at 6 p.m. on Zoom \nPandemics: Yesterday\, Today and Tomorrow?\n\nIn March 2017\, Dr. Marshall Bloom visited FVCC and presented an evening Honors Symposium talk titled “Predicting Pandemics and the Myth of Sisyphus.” The Zika virus pandemic was just winding down\, and Dr Bloom speculated on what the next pandemic might be. Now\, three years later\, Dr. Bloom will present “Pandemics: Yesterday\, Today and Tomorrow” while Montana and the rest of the world are still coping with the COVID-19 pandemic. The talk will offer an overview of other emerging infectious disease\, why they emerge and how they can transform into true pandemics.  Dr. Bloom will describe several recent pandemics and some of the lessons that should have been learned from them\, before reviewing his 2017 March Madness Pandemic Picks. This will be followed by an examination of the current COVID-19 pandemic with particular attention to the vaccines that are starting to turn the corner on this deadly disease.\nAbout Dr. Marshall Bloom \nA recognized expert on the pathogenesis of tick-borne flaviviruses\, persistent infections and parvoviruses\, Marshall E. Bloom\, M.D.\, serves as chief of the biology of vector-borne viruses section in the Laboratory of Virology and is the associate director for scientific management at Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton\, MT. RML is a part of the Division of Intramural Research of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health. \nThe author of numerous scientific articles and book chapters\, Dr. Bloom is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM)\, American Society of Microbiology (ASM)\, the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS)\, and the American Society for Virology. He has served on organizing committees and advisory boards for a number of major scientific conferences\, including multiple terms on annual ASM Biothreats Conferences. \nAs associate director\, Dr. Bloom played a major role in design\, construction and staffing of the RML Integrated Research Facility\, which houses NIAID’s first Biosafety Level 4 research program. He is considered an authority on biosafety\, biocontainment and management of high containment laboratory research programs. \nSince the early 2000’s\, Dr. Bloom has studied the biology of tick-borne flaviviruses in mammalian and arthropod systems\, making considerable contributions in the areas of viral pathogenesis\, viral persistence\, ultrastructure\, gene expression and the interactions between virus\, arthropod host and mammalian hosts. \nDr. Bloom has been a spokesperson for the RML COVID-19 research program and has a significant role in the institutional response. He has served as an advisor to local and state health departments on this topic. \nIn fall 2020\, Dr. Bloom was inducted into the Montana Bioscience Hall of Fame. \nHe is supported by the Intramural Research Program of NIAID/NIH.

SUMMARY:Classroom Observatory: Research
DESCRIPTION:Academic Technology and Outreach at Montana State University\, in partnership with the Montana Learning Center\, will offer two free online courses for teachers interested in learning how to use a remote\, robotic telescope for astronomical research in the classroom. \nThe courses\, “Classroom Observatory: Astrophotography” and “Classroom Observatory: Research\,” will train Montana middle and high school educators on the use of the Learning Center’s 16-inch Ritchey-Chretien telescope\, which is located on a mountaintop in New Mexico. The goals of the courses are to offer teachers and students across Montana access to a research-grade telescope and the opportunity to conduct astronomical research as well as contribute to publishable research. \nThis is the second course\, Classroom Observatory: Research\, and it will build upon the astrophotography course and teach participants how to apply research photometry\, or the science of the measurement of light\, on astronomical images. During the course\, participants will perform research on variable stars using photometric filters. Collected data will be submitted to the American Association of Variable Star Observers International Database. Participants must have completed “Classroom Observatory” or “Classroom Observatory: Astrophotography” to take this course. \nCheck out this article for more info!\nMontana Learning Center to offer free courses for teachers on use of remote\, robotic telescope \n

SUMMARY:Virtual Voyagers: Boldly Navigating Security and Virtual Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:On October 1st\, STEMconnector will host a free virtual webinar for teachers\, parents\, and out-of-school instructors:  National Day of Design: Join the Virtual Voyage – How to Navigate your Mission. This webinar will walk teachers and parents through the activity and how to complete it with their students. \nThe Mission\, which has been re-imagined for use at school and/or at home\, is conveniently broken into sections with implementation guidelines for individual\, group\, in-person and virtual use. Each Student Edition is ready for use by individual students or student teams as they navigate the project.  The accompanying Instructors’ Guide is accessible to parents\, after-school program providers\, mentors\, etc.\, includes detailed instructions on how to implement the activity at home or in the classroom along with optional follow-on activities to extend the learning experience. While the Educators’ Guide offers suggestions for how to relate the Day of Design Mission to what is already being taught in the classroom\, it can be a completely stand-alone activity. \nParticipation is open to any student in grades 1 through 12th\, and any adult supporting STEM learning for that student. \n2020 Walmart’s National Day of Design Mission\, Virtual Voyagers: Boldly Navigating Security and Virtual Collaboration encourages students to employ critical thinking skills\, teamwork\, STEM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Math) principles\, and an entrepreneurial mindset to create a solution to a real-world\, relevant challenge. \n  \n
